Islip is the birthplace of St Edward the Confessor (born here 1000 years ago)- our website www.islip.org.uk gives further details of our celebrations in 2005. To redeem a vow he had made to visit St Peter's, Rome, he built the Abbey of St Peter at Westminster and endowed it with the lands and buildings of the village where he had been born. The words of the King's charter can be seen underneath a painting of the King in the north aisle.
The oldest part of the present church dates to the end of the 12th century; the church was largely rebuilt in the 14th century and a tower added in the 15th. The church was badly damaged during the Civil War during the Battle of Islip bridge (28th February 1645). Other celebrated people besides the Confessor have had links with St Nicholas including Abbot John Islip, Abbot of Westminster in 1500; Dr Robert South, a notable benefactor who founded the local school in 1710; William Buckland, Rector of Islip and Dean of Westminster 1845-1856 geologist.
