St Swithins Church, Ashmanhaugh

The church possibly dates from the tenth century, it is dedicated to St Swithin whose cult dates from the mid-tenth century, which may be a guide to its founding.
In 1556 Edward Steward, the parson of Horning was also curate of Ashmanhaugh. Since the late 1970s the vicar of Horning has again been the incumbent.
St Swithin's is now one of the churches of the Horning Benefice.
St Swithin was Bishop of Winchester in 852 and was canonised in the 900's. Nowadays, St Swithin is remembered particularly on the 15 July.
The story related to this tells us that he had asked especially that he should be given an ordinary burial in the churchyard of the Minster, 'that the sweet rain of heaven should fall upon my grave'. However, at a later date it was considered that it would be more appropriate for him to be reburied within Winchester Cathedral. After the reburial it rained for many days. Hence the connection between rain and St Swithin.
