Stratton Strawless: St Margaret, Stratton Strawless

About our church
St Margarets is a small grade 1 medieval church with a lovely interior full of artifacts of beauty and historic interest. The church is open daily till dusk and visitors are very welcome. The most striking feature are the alabaster monuments in the Marsham side chapel. This great Norfolk family lived at the hall for several centuries and the church is full of their monuments. The most well known Marsham was Robert a correspondent of Gilbert White of Selborne who was one of the earliest phenologists recording his long life the annual emergence of specific plants and arrival of migrating birds which is of great interest to modern students of climate change. He planted more than two million trees, including the great cedar that still stands in the park and is one of the largest in Europe. Other points of interest are some very special medieval glass and a twenty-five-candle brass chandelier, which is lit for Evensong.
